IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 – Basic Tips
IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter based on a given situation. You may be writing to a friend, a company, or an authority figure. Your task is to write at least 150 words, and you should spend around 20 minutes on it. Here are some basic but important tips to help you succeed:
1. Understand the Letter Type
There are three main types of letters:
-
Formal – to someone you don’t know personally (e.g., a manager, official).
-
Semi-formal – to someone you know but not closely (e.g., a neighbor, teacher).
-
Informal – to a friend or family member.
Tip: Always match the tone and language to the type of letter.
2. Follow the Structure
Use a clear structure:
-
Greeting (Dear Sir/Madam, Dear John, etc.)
-
Opening sentence (State the purpose of the letter)
-
Body (2–3 paragraphs covering the bullet points)
-
Closing sentence (Polite ending or next steps)
-
Sign-off (Yours sincerely, Best wishes, etc.)
3. Cover All Bullet Points
The question gives you three bullet points to cover. Address each one clearly and in detail. Missing one can lower your score.
4. Use a Range of Vocabulary and Grammar
Use varied sentence structures and vocabulary to show your language ability. Avoid repeating words too often and aim for correct spelling and punctuation.
5. Keep Your Tone Consistent
Don’t mix formal and informal language. For example, don’t write “Hi there” in a formal letter, or “Yours faithfully” in an informal one.
6. Practice Time Management
Spend no more than 20 minutes on Task 1 so you have enough time for Task 2, which carries more weight in scoring.
7. Check Your Work
If time allows, quickly review your letter to fix any grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors.
By following these tips and practicing regularly, you'll become more confident and perform better in Task 1 of the IELTS General Training Writing test.
